The completion of The Star Gold Coast’s second hotel and apartments tower marks a major milestone, a 65-storey landmark now open for business. Usher Group was engaged to deliver a high-performance fire protection and coating solution for the structural steel V components, meeting the highest standards of durability, corrosion resistance, and fire safety for one of Queensland’s most prominent new developments.
Our Approach
Working closely with Dulux® Protective Coatings, Usher Group’s James Booth identified and implemented a tailored four-coat system for the structural steel V components:
1st Coat – Dulux® Zincanode® 402 @ 75µm DFT: A two-pack epoxy zinc-rich primer providing cathodic corrosion resistance, applied to abrasive blast-cleaned steel for long-term durability in harsh coastal conditions.
2nd Coat – Dulux® FIRETEX® FX6010: An intumescent coating delivering up to 120 minutes of fire protection. Fast-drying and suitable for interior or exterior structural steel, applied directly to blast-cleaned or primed steel.
3rd & Topcoat – Dulux® Weathermax® HBR @ 75µm DFT each: A high-build polyurethane coating offering UV stability, graffiti resistance, and long-term asset protection — maintaining gloss and colour in harsh marine and high UV environments.
The Result
The four-coat system delivered a complete solution combining corrosion resistance, fire safety, and long-term durability — ensuring structural integrity in one of Australia’s most demanding coastal environments. As James Booth explains: “This four-coat system was the ideal choice for The Star Gold Coast’s iconic V components because each layer delivers a critical function. Together, it guarantees structural integrity in one of Australia’s most demanding coastal environments.”
